Write Your Own Obituary—What’s Your Legacy?

MONDAY BYTES – February 13, 2012

My friend Florrie’s taking a class in which everyone has to write his or her own obituary. It’s a great exercise—and it can be played two ways.

Version one: write as though you had just died and review the life you’ve led. Do you feel good about it? What has mattered?

Version two: write your obituary for the future—after you’ve lived your full life. Write in hindsight on the future you intend to create for yourself and the impact you’ll make.

Check out this Wake Up Call article on writing your obit. Learn how the Nobel prize was a by-product of a mistake in an obituary and how Kelsey Grammer (playing the role of  Frasier) handled a similar mishap, and what he did as a result of contemplating his life goals.

For inspiration, watch this quick 16 minute TED talk with author Brad Meltzer focusing on motivation and the difference one person can make.

For this week:

Give it a go, write your own obituary: it’ll put your life and values in perspective and increase your motivation to lead the best life you can.

As always, I’m interested in your feedback . . .
