My MacBook died this last week—no files lost, all was backed up—but getting a new laptop gave me the opportunity to re-think my screen saver.
The images we choose to save on computers and cell phone screens are important: our eyes will rest on the dozens of times over the course of a week and they become imprinted in our minds’ eye and memory.
So why not use (or include in your screen saver slide show) an image that reminds you of your goals and your mission?
For my new laptop I decided to take a photo of my Dream Board and upload that. The idea of a Dream Board is actually the subject of my very first Monday Byte blogpost!
The basic idea of a dream board is to cut out photos, graphics, and phrases from magazines — those that signify aspects of the life we are committing to work towards — and use these to design a visual map of the future you intend to create.
Why bother?
Musicians typically have ideas for creative projects that they are not acting on for a zillion legitimate reasons, but what’s at the heart of all the rationalization is a fear of failure.
So why not give yourself a visual cue to motivate you towards the future you will take action towards?
Maybe arts and craft isn’t quite your thing. I’d still suggest being strategic with the image you use for your screens.
What helps you remind yourself of what’s really important? It may be a symbol, a color, a theme, chord, or an equation! Pick your signifier use it on screens to remind you of the person you are becoming.
For this week:Take a look at the images you’re using for your computer, iPad, and Smart Phone screen savers. If they aren’t helping you feel mission-driven and action oriented, then swap them out for some new inspiration!
