What you want

MONDAY BYTES – July 30, 2012

Immediate wants are about immediate pleasure: for another hour of sleep, the latest digital gadget, or a long weekend in our favorite city.

Our longer-term wants—to reduce one’s stress, have a better relationship with the in-laws, a better paying job, etc.—are often about achieving a certain stasis (or status) that we imagine will be better than our current one.

But if we think about what we really want in life, what we ultimately want . . . then the answers start to get more interesting.

The first step is to really know—to get clear about — what you actually want. This can take some digging. Having a vague notion that you need a change—or simply being frustrated with your current life—isn’t enough. You can’t get to your destination if you don’t know where you’re going!

For this week: Think about what you REALLY want and write it down! Often it comes down to wanting to become the person we imagine we could be, so who is that person? Consider what’s driving you towards this goal, and what’s fueling your desire. You may want to buddy up on this: forward this email to a friend and see if he or she wants to get together and discuss each other’s “big want.”

And next week let’s examine what you might NEED in order to get at this big WANT.
