Waiting for Permission?

Decision Making

Decision making: what’s your M.O.?

When decisions are about investing in ourselves, many of us are overly cautious, waiting for “permission” or approval from our friends, family, and colleagues. It may feel selfish or “wrong” to invest in ourselves, whether it’s a much-needed vacation or professional development.

When there’s money, time, and emotion involved, it can be difficult to prioritize our own needs, to balance these against those of others and against the unknown future.

This “don’t be selfish” voice can help us be considerate and fair but it can also keep us stuck in job situations, relationships, and lifestyles that aren’t healthy: keeping us in a “holding pattern.”

If we regularly ignore our own needs, what kind of role model are we for others?

Sometimes we avoid the discomfort of making decisions by delaying them. But a delay IS a decision: a decision not to act.

Questions for the week: What decision, investment, or action have you been delaying?
