MONDAY BYTES – January 9, 2012
Latest obsession: wanting to crawl inside the mind of an architect and learn how to think like one. Accessing the visual / spacial “channel” of our imagination can be freeing. For musicians, thinking about physical space and 3 dimensional structures can be both grounding and liberating, since our discipline is a temporal, fleeting one.
I’m happy to report there’s a YouTube channel that let’s you crawl inside an architect’s mind: from Barry Berkus, it’s “How to think like an Architect.”
In this quick 4 minute video, Berkus walks us through the early design process, focusing on the essentials. It’s the big picture: what do you need to pay attention to first? Berkus shows how he starts–how he thinks through the design problem by starting with the key issues: the sun, water, sound, views.
For this week: focus on the architecture of your own thinking. For any creative problem you’re wrestling with, have you identified the most important factors? (The equivalent to the sun, the water?) To see our real options clearly and simply, we need to identify what’s most important.
