MONDAY BYTES – August 6, 2012

Last week’s Byte focused on what you ultimately want. Now the question is, what do you need in order to get what you want? This is where the Wizard of Oz comes in.
It’s a classic hero’s journey tale, not unlike the Odyssey or Star Wars: the Wizard of Oz involves a quest. Dorothy wants to get home; the Lion wants courage, the Scarecrow a brain, the Tin Man, a heart. And they need to journey to Oz to ask for help from the Mighty Oz himself.
Along the way they face a series of ordeals (wicked witch, flying monkeys, etc.) that test their courage, smarts, love, and their loyalty. And what do they find—after all their harrowing difficulties, when they finally reach the Wizard, and they’re yearning to have their “wants” finally satisfied?
SPOILER ALERT!
It turns out A) the Wizard can’t do what they had in mind, but B) they already HAD the very things they were yearning for.
It was the journey itself that allowed them to develop these qualities and recognize them. What good was the Wizard? It was the Wizard who pointed out to each of them their own qualities, capacity, and value—and these were revelations to the Lion, the Scarecrow, and the Tin Man—it changed their perspective, their entire world view! And it was Glinda who tells Dorothy, “You always had the power!”
So back to you. What is it YOU Want? What is the journey you need to take? And if you had a Wizard, coach, or mentor in your corner, to help you work towards what you ultimately want—what would that Wizard tell you?
Yes, it’s possible to coach yourself towards that better life. Most of us, though, need a little help. It may come in a variety of guises (not usually a Good Witch in full costume). What we may need to help us on our path might be a crucial book found at just the right time, or a pivotal conversation with a coach, or a regular morning walk with a friend.
For this week: Think about the journey that you’re on. What is it that you need in order to get to your desired future? Who have you got in your court to help with this? Sit down with a close friend and talk it through.
