Today, the real question I want to ask isn’t about your music career. Today I want to ask about the bigger picture that you and your music are essential to.

Here we are: It’s the day we set aside for MLK’s legacy. And this week we usher in a new administration. Emotions and pent-up energies are running high.

After the year—and the week—we’ve had, there’s a palpable need for hope. I want to believe, I need to believe that better times are coming. And that I can be a part of bringing that better future to life.

The question I’ve been asking myself is the same one I want to ask you, dear reader. It’s this . . .

How shall you honor this day so that it is a new beginning—the beginning of the future you want to co-create?

One question

Here’s the close of MLK’s last speech, delivered the night before he was assassinated:

“Well, I don’t know what will happen now. We’ve got some difficult days ahead. But it doesn’t matter with me now. Because I’ve been to the mountaintop. And I don’t mind. Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I’m not concerned about that now. I just want to do God’s will. And He’s allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I’ve looked over. And I’ve seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people will get to the promised land. And I’m happy tonight. I’m not worried about anything. I’m not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.”

I’d love to hear how you are finding hope and taking positive action today. The world needs the good work. Needs the music you make to help build communities belonging. Let’s get started now.
