Today, the real question I want to ask isn’t about your music career. Today I want to ask about the bigger picture that you and your music are essential to.
This is the day we set aside for MLK’s legacy.
And this day also brings on the new administration. So emotions are running high—there’s much fear and concern over the state of the planet, the Middle East, the war in Ukraine, and the uncertain future our nation is heading into.
After the year we’ve had, there’s a palpable need for hope. Where do you find yours?
In dark times, when there’s so much in the world that we cannot control, what I know brings hope is helping others. Finding a meaningful way to serve in our community, connecting with others to build a sense of belonging.
I’m not being naive, I know full well that the darker days are coming—yet I still believe that each of us has a crucial role to play in weaving together a better future.
That’s where I find the hope—in the faith that better days will eventually come and that we each are here to help bring that better future forward.
The question I’ve been asking myself is the same one I want to ask you, dear reader. It’s this . . .
How will you honor this day so that it can mark a new beginning—the beginning of the better future we can co-create together?
Here’s the close of MLK’s last speech, delivered the night before he was assassinated:
“Well, I don’t know what will happen now. We’ve got some difficult days ahead. But it doesn’t matter with me now. Because I’ve been to the mountaintop. And I don’t mind. Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I’m not concerned about that now. I just want to do God’s will. And He’s allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I’ve looked over. And I’ve seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people will get to the promised land. And I’m happy tonight. I’m not worried about anything. I’m not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.”
