The Art of the Pitch

MONDAY BYTES – August 20, 2012

Many musicians dislike networking, hate the elevator pitch exercise, and are awkward and embarrassed to talk aout what they have to offer!

It’s really a shame because most people are interested to hear what someone else is excited about–if they can describe it in a concise and compelling way. Enthusiasm is contagious.

If you are in the arts, you need friends! We all need potential collaborators, clients, funders, students, or audience members, right? To make friends, you have to be willing to share with others what you’re interested in.

A pitch is simply a way of letting people know who you are and what you care about so that you might find common interests and help each other.

I’ve been taking a tour of online tools and advice on pitches. There’s a lot of good stuff out there, but for musicians, these are my current favorites:

A terrific short video with cyber publicist Ariel Hyatt interviewing Laura Allen (founder 15 Second Pitch): the musician’s guide to making the Perfect Pitch. And afterwards, check out Laura’s fun online tool, the “Pitch Wizard.”

To round out the resources, here’s a short article from Ariel Hyatt on effective pitches.

Challenge for the week: Send me your pitch: I’d love to read what you’ve come up with! Want to know how you come across to others? I’m happy to offer quick and FREE feedback to the first 10 pitches I receive!

Curious about working with me? Details are HERE.
