Thanks to all who sent in Bios last week for feedback: interesting profiles and excellent credentials! I noticed, though, that a few of these had room for improvement. A bio is always a work in progress, so it’s good to take a fresh look at your own. To determine how effective YOUR bio is, take the quiz:.
1. Does your bio start with “a grabber,” something interesting and memorable?
2. Does your bio contain ANY cliches? (trite or over-used phrases?) [Hint: The answer should be NO]
3. Is your bio written in chronological order? (Do you start with when / where you were born or started studying, and then progress forward in time)? [Hint: The answer should be NO]
4. Does your bio give the reader a real sense of what your mission is? Your unique strengths, and what sets you apart from others?
5. Is your Bio organized into paragraphs that are topic-specific?
6. Does your Bio help readers get to know the real you: someone they’d like to actually meet and have a conversation with over coffee?
Moral: A bio should be more than a laundry list of places where you’ve performed, people you’ve studied with, and awards you’ve won.
It’s not easy to convey YOU on paper in words, but it’s worth the trouble. A better bio can boost all of your career efforts, because we never get a second chance to make that first impression!
