Help! Summer is slipping by!

MONDAY BYTES July 28, 2014

Summertime is finite and fleeting. For many, we’re in the home stretch.

How are you doing with your summer goals?

If you haven’t yet completed (or started) your ambitious summer goals, or have done inconsistent work and made little progress, try this:

1. Imagine it’s Sept. 1 and you haven’t completed any more on your projects than what you’ve done now.

Let it sink in.

2. Now imagine it’s Sept. 1 and you HAVE completed (or made significant headway) on the most important items on your list. Imagine writing a Facebook update Sept. 1 on “the Most important and rewarding thing I did this summer was. . .”

Let it sink in.

3. Realize that what’s holding you back is NOT s lack of time or a lack of willpower.

It’s what Seth Godin describes as the Lizard Brain that keeps us in our comfort zone, busy being busy instead of getting at what’s important. Seth describes this common self sabotage in his post onModern Procrastination.

Experiment for this week: Schedule 25 minutes of uninterrupted time (you make it so by unplugging and going where you won’t be disturbed). Use the time for ONE task: focus on the most important (as opposed to urgent) item on your to-do list. Do this each day this week.

As always, I welcome hearing your thoughts and feedback!
