Spring Break

MONDAY BYTES – March 19, 2012

Think back to your last vacation: did you spend a big chunk of the time checking emails, calling in, and otherwise taking care of business? To find out if your vacations are a true break, take the quiz. Consider your most recent trip or “staycation” and see how many of these questions you answer with a “yes.”

7 Signs of a real vacation:

1. You lose track of days: weekends and weekdays blur.

2. You wake up and don’t immediately think, “What do I need to do NOW?”

3. Instead, you might actually think, “What do I WANT to do?”

4. You spend time vegging out and don’t feel guilty about it.

5. You notice that your stress level has “chunked down”—you’ve down-shifted and can feel it physically.

6. You do some therapeutic reading, walking, visiting friends, museum-going, or anything else that helps you feel human, and you notice a renewed energy.

7. All of this works so that you don’t mind (too much) going back to your regular life.

Questions: How can you build some of the good effects of your last real vacation into your regular life? Can you declare a regular weekend morning retreat to focus on rejuvenation? Can you schedule time each workday for a 15 minute break to remind yourself about “being” human, not just “doing”?

Challenge for the week: Experiment with ways to bring your best “vacation mind”—your playful, creative, and curious self—to your everyday work.
