Do you see colors, do you visualize music? or create narratives?We may be completely unaware of how we conceptualize music until we encounter another person’s contrasting interpretation or translation of a work.
Being able to experience how someone else sees the world through a work of art, that’s the fabulousness of a performance – it offers the possibility of being inside someone else’s mind.
In seeing a work translated into another art form is an added opportunity to experience a work transformed.
French pianist Alexandre Tharaud has collaborated on a number of film projects. Take a look at his version of Couperin’s Tic Toc Choc (2:45) realized with a dancer and hip hop / beatbox artist.
It’s fascinating to see how choreography can help us hear more – and wonderful to celebrate the physicality of music and the sheer delight in the sense of motion and time.
Compare this realization with a straight concert video of another terrific pianist Grigory Sokolov’s performance.
