Panic in Home Depot

MONDAY BYTES – October 1, 21012

I’m getting help with a partial rehab of my kitchen (Thank you, Colleen!) and I’ve been learning a lot. For one thing, when I’m confronted with a zillion choices of color, design, price, and quality, it makes me crazy.

Talking this through with Colleen helped me sort it out, and having her suggest particular samples helped me discover what I liked and didn’t. Without her I would have given up!

It can be the same thing with life choices. We can become so overwhelmed by options, that we can become paralyzed and make no choice, take no action.

A trusted consultant can help you clear the clutter to reveal the essentials, and slim down the options, making it easier to make the “right” choice. And very often the “right” choice is simply the decision that gets you unstuck and started in the right direction!

There I was in Home Depot, overwhelmed by choices for countertops. Nothing felt right or looked like what I could imagine in my kitchen. But then I found myself holding on to two of the samples and realized that with all the others we’d looked at, my stomach was “saying” blechh, and with these two, my stomach wasn’t saying anything! Instead, I felt calm and realized I felt pretty good about these choices.

Moral: Trust your gut. (But note that sometimes we need help getting to what our gut is actually saying.)

For this week: I’d love to hear what has helped you in making tough decisions—write in and let’s share!

Bonus: Great read on The Tyranny of Choice.
