After 9/11: How Has Music Helped?

MONDAY BYTES – September 12, 2011

Last Thursday in NY I went to a concert at Trinity Church at Wall Street, the church closest to ground zero. The concert was part of a weeklong 9/11 memorial program of music, poetry readings, all-night labyrinth walks, and an outpouring of community spirit. It reminded me of how essential the arts are to helping us process overwhelming emotions.

The concert was the Chiara String Quartet playing two works written in response to 9/11: a work by Richard Danielpour and the other by Robert Sirota. The Chiara Quartet played the hell out these and hearing them in this setting, steps from the site, was especially poignant. Here was a perfect example of music in service: expressing what words cannot, capturing our sense, our time, our fragility. Whether music allows me to grieve or frames and contains my emotions for me, I’m not sure, I only know that I’m grateful.

Questions for the week:

What has helped you over this anniversary of 9/11?

How has music helped?

As always, I welcome your comments and feedback!
