MONDAY BYTES – June 4, 2012

Whether you want to promote a new album, your private teaching studio, or your next concert, you need to consider the story of what it is you are offering. Scheherazade had 1001 compelling stories: do you?
I’m a big fan of Terry O’Reilly’s CBC Radio show on marketing: Age of Persuasion. Check out this fast and fun episode, The Persuasive Power of Story Telling.
In it, Terry explores innovative marketing strategies using stories about everything from Scheherazade, to a quest for an obscure fly fishing tract, the origins of Dorothy’s OZ, and the plight of a commuting percussionist. He also covers the Honda commercial using chorus (here’s the video on how the commercial was made: the story behind the story).
Challenge for the week: identify 3 different stories you could add to your bio, website, press release, teaching philosophy statement, or grant proposal. The stories should illustrate an aspect of what you really care about and are fascinated by. Put us in the moment—show don’t tell!
Is it the story of how you first fell in love with music or with a particular repertoire? Or how your ensemble members found each other? What about the rags to riches story of a commission and the road from new score to premier?
Join me in NYC tomorrow Tuesday June 5 at Chamber Music America’s FREE First Tuesday series, where I’m presenting a session on Project Management for Musicians. Seating is limited so reserve your space & get the details HERE.
Questions we asked participants to consider in advance are:
· What is the top priority project you are focusing on now?
· What has been your biggest challenge with this project?
· What topics or issues do you especially want to have covered in this workshop?
See you there!
