MONDAY BYTES – August 13, 2012

Happens all the time: talented, hard working people find themselves stalled in their projects (and in their careers). These are bright, ambitious people with good ideas and plenty of energy.
But they are stymied: overwhelmed and unsure what next step to take. We’ve all been stuck at one time or another. Without a clear “best” path, we may be so afraid of making a “wrong” move, that we make NO move.
And it’s easy to avoid taking action by being busy—taking care of everything else except the work that would actually move our careers forward.
The irony is you can be doing all the “right” things—practicing and planning well, maybe even networking and creating great promo materials—but if you don’t actually start making the booking calls or email contacts to get performance dates, you’ll never book that tour! Planning is worthless if it’s not attached to real action and follow through.
The weird little secret: the most important thing is starting—and starting small is good! We learn as we go and correct our course along the way. We learn by DOING (not by planning).
Questions for the week: In the past, what has helped get you unstuck? What current project of yours is stalled? Why—what’s in your way? What’s that first smart and small action step you could take this week?
Bonus: Here’s a blog post from Dallas Travers, the Actor’s Advocate, on how to get past obstacles. Great advice packed into a short video.
