President’s Day has me ruminating on leadership.
We don’t often think about musicians as leaders or associate musicianship and leadership. Perhaps it’s because unless someone is starting her or his own ensemble, series, or festival, we think of musicians as driven by their individual artistic vision. Or maybe it’s because we associate leadership with political clout and influence?
But think of how musicians use their talents to affect change: from Bono to Yo-Yo to Midori (the first name club?)
So how do you want to contribute to your community? What’s the impact you want to make on others? It’s not the luxury question that you can afford to think about once you’ve “made it” and have influence—it’s the question that should animate the work you do each day—why are you making music?
Here’s my President’s Day gift to you: have a terrific week and kick it off by listening to this inspiring talk that Seth Godin gave to a group of emerging artists.
