Happy Labor Day

MONDAY BYTES – September 2, 2013LaborDayStamp

As we celebrate the end of summer along with the start of the new school year and concert season, it’s a good time to think about our labor.

Typically, whether our work is one full-time job or 5 part-time freelance gigs, there are inevitably some parts we like more than others. There are the portions of our work that we love, and there are portions we tolerate, and some bits that we truly dislike.

We may not yet be in a position to rid ourselves of the parts we dislike, but there are ways to improve the situation:

1. Focus on the work that you love and make the most of it. Brainstorm ways to create more need for this work. What specifically do you love about it? How might you create more demand for this work or more opportunities to do it?

2. For the work that you tolerate, how can you make it more interesting, more productive (so you can do less of it), or more useful to you and others. Again, look for ways to get maximum value out of your work. Perhaps there are networking contacts possible through this work or ways to develop transferable skills you can apply to the work that you love.

3. For the work you really dislike, look for ways to replace it through increasing #1 or #2, or by finding or creating other work opportunities. The energy that you may be putting into disliking or complaining about this work can be channeled to helping you improve your situation and move on.

Questions for the week: Complacency is the enemy: don’t “settle.” Write our what you love, tolerate, and dislike in your work life. Write down possibilities for ways to build up the parts you love, improve that which you tolerate, and eliminate or transform what you dislike.
