Happiness Advantage

MONDAY BYTES – May 7, 2012

Many of us believe that if we work really hard, then we’ll become successful, and once we’re successful, THEN we’ll be happy. Well, there’s some revelatory data that shows that the reverse is true: that it is actually the being happy—the positive attitude—that is needed first. That if we bring this to our work it can lead us to success.

Dopamine is the chemical our body produces when we experience positive feelings and dopamine not only makes us feel good, but it turns on the learning centers in our brains. Your brain on positive means you test higher in intelligence, creativity, and energy.

My sister Deirdre sent me this link to Shawn Achor’s fast and fun 12 minute TED talk. In it he outlines some surprisingly simple things you can do for the next 21 days to rewire your brain for positive—for the happiness advantage. Check out Achor’s Happy Secret to Better Work.

Challenge for the week: Choose just one of Shawn’s tips and commit to doing it for 21 days. What have you got to lose—besides your negativity?

As always, I’d love to hear your thoughts and how this works for you—
