Got Mission? Got Vision? Got your Yellow Brick Road in sight?

MONDAY BYTES – February 20, 2012

There are a lot of corporate ideas and buzz words that non-profits and creative individual have adopted. Two of these are Vision Statement and Mission Statement and although these terms are easily confused, and can seem like advertising jargon divorced from any actual art—the meaning and use of these statements can actually be powerful tools for creative individuals and organizations.

Many musicians first encounter the need to write a mission or vision statement when applying for grants. And if you haven’t thought through what you’re doing and why and where you’re headed, you’ll find it’s impossible to write a compelling grant proposal. And beyond grants applications, thinking about these issues for your own career deserves the same care and consideration.

Ask yourself: Do you have a concise, well-articulated vision for your future? What about your Mission: In terms of your work, can you communicate your core purpose?

Check these out: Here are 2 handy short videos to help differentiate—and write—your Mission Statement (4′) and a Vision Statement (5′). These are from Erika Olson with MyStrategicPlan.com. Whether you’re working on this for your ensemble, teaching studio, organization, or to focus on your freelance career, these are thought-provoking ideas and practical tips to make the process easier.

For this week: Write it down! Your core purpose / mission and your vision for your future. These days we need to create our own yellow brick roads to success. Why not start this week?

As always, I’m interested in your feedback . . . and I’d love to hear what you come up with!
