What is it you’re avoiding? What tough realization, or hard work, or change in your daily habits, are you putting off?
The confusing thing is that we can be very busy and productive, but be focusing on the things that DON’T really make important changes and advances in our lives.
We may be sabotaging our long term goals with distractions that seem to be aiming us toward what we want, but in fact, simply keep us treading water.
From a recent post by entrepreneur/marketing guru Seth Godin, (Crash diets and good habits), was this gem:
“Your audacious life goals are fabulous. We’re proud of you for having them. But it’s possible that those goals are designed to distract you from the thing that’s really frightening you—the shift in daily habits that would mean a re-invention of how you see yourself.”
For this week: write down the ONE important thing you’ve been avoiding, procrastinating doing.
Then, invest in yourself and schedule 25 minutes to work on this and make this focused, non-distracted time (no email, cell, text, music, or interruptions). See how much you can accomplish.
I’ve found writing down the thing we’re avoiding—naming the elephant in the room—can actually make tackle that thing much easier.
It worked for me recently when I’d been avoiding drafting the lessons plans for the semester. Once I wrote it down, it seemed silly not to at least start—and once started, it wasn’t as difficult as I’d imagined: I ended up completing a draft in about 2 hours!
