MONDAY BYTES – April 28, 2014
This past week I saw the Quilts and Color exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and it’s a knockout. There’s nothing like being stunned by color and pattern: each quilt has its own outrageous sensibility.
For the viewer, it’s important to see these both up close for the meticulous handwork but then to step back 5, then 10, and 20 feet to see the changing rhythm and balance of the designs.
Think about the quilt of your life – how you’ve pieced together a series of experiences and skills to design your career and lifestyle.
As with the making of a quilt, we need at times to be totally focused on the minutia and tend to the details of daily living.
But it’s also important to regularly step back and assess the bigger picture of what we’re making. To see the patterns of your projects and behavior, to help shape the design of your future.
In the show’s accompanying materials, the collector, Gerald Roy, quotes one of the quilt makers:
“I make my quilts as fast as I can so my children won’t freeze and as beautiful as I can so my heart won’t break.”
Consider: What is it you’d like to change in the design of your current life?
And if you can, go see the show: it’s up until July 27.
“You will not see a more beautiful show anywhere in New England. What a bliss-out.”
—The Boston Globe
