Here’s a riddle (to distract you from holiday stress):
What can 2 cartoon bears teach us about the arts economy, advocacy, and fundraising–in under 5 minutes?
Find out in this terrific short video “Explaining an Arts Nonprofit” (4:49) made by the 8 member vocal ensemble Octarium. This cartoon highlights many of the bumps we can experience in talking with audiences and potential supporters.
The video reminds us that, as musicians, we have to do more than simply show up and play. We need to be spokespeople for the art form and to anticipate many of the misunderstandings our non-musician supporters are likely to have – we need to have clear explanations to resolve these misunderstandings.
If you like the bears, here’s part 2, another short video (5:07) – they make a return engagement with “Government Funding of the Arts (or Explaining an Arts Nonprofit, the Saga Continues).”
For this week: How well can you talk to others about the economics of your work? How do you explain it to non-musician friends and family? Over the holidays, practice your conversational advocacy skills.
As always, I’m interested in your feedback and ideas!
