A few weeks ago I attended the New Music Seminar and one of the highlights for me was seeing Nashville-based “Live Performance Producer” Tom Jackson do a master class on performance communication with a budding rock group.
Tom helps performers connect with audiences, coaching them on how to deliver more effective, compelling performances. He demystifies much of what we take for granted—the craft aspects of stage presence and charisma, and the mindset needed.
The good news is that much of how to connect with audiences CAN be taught. The bad news is that so few classical or jazz musicians ever get any of this kind of coaching.
In the class one of the best take-aways was Tom’s 3 things that audiences really want. (These apply to all genres and disciplines.) As I listened it struck me that in all my years attending and teaching at music schools, I’d never heard anyone state anything so clear and true about audiences and performances!
