You know the 80/20 rule: of the all the work you do during your day, it’s 20% that produce the results that really matter. 20% of your work produces 80% of your effective results.
The challenge is to identify and focus on the right 20%. Identifying the right 20% takes a little planning and reflection time. It’s often the first few crucial minutes of our workday that set the pattern.
We need to take a few moments to reflect on our work, center our thoughts, and plan for the day. But we’re often so caught up in cleaning up / catching up on all of our social media, that we actually fritter our lives away. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and email cleanup—none of these are helping you get at your essential 20%.
Want to be more effective? Take the time you need to reflect and rewire your thinking. Tune in to what it is you most want to accomplish. 5 minutes can make a huge difference.
Turn off your devices, do some deep breathing: quiet your racing thoughts and center your focus. It works wonders both in and out of the practice room.
Questions for the week: Take the moment you need. NOW. Focus on your 20%.
