MONDAY BYTES – April 4, 2011
A couple of weeks ago I was walking in Boston’s downtown financial district and saw a white commercial truck double parked in front of an office tower. On the truck was its company name and tagline:
Shred King
We know what’s important
The image has been resonating ever since, underscoring the question of how we stay focused on what’s truly important. These days we are all contending with information overload: too many distractions, projects, details, and stress. In this environment, it can be difficult to focus on the important—as opposed to what’s merely urgent. Time management is often mistakenly equated with schedule efficiency, but it’s actually about making choices—what are we’re going to say “no” to in order to say “yes” to what’s important. It’s about clarifying our priorities in life and acting on them.
For this week: I recommend taking a close look at how you’re actually spending your time (keep a log and note how much time you spend on various projects and activities). What are you getting done? And is it what’s really important? Since April is National Stress Awareness month, this is a good time to make needed changes. Focusing on your real priorities in life and taking charge of your time is one of the best ways to manage stress!
Time now for a little extra byte:
Notable dates this month: April 14 is Ex-Spouse Day (!); April 26 is Administrative Assistants’ Day; and April 30 is National Honesty Day. This last one kills me: just one day for honesty? Is there a “National Dishonesty Day” or is that reserved for all the other days of the year? Does this mean that on April 30 we should not engage in the little white lies we generally commit for social reasons? (Do we really want to tell the truth when someone asks, “Do these pants make my butt look like Mt. Rushmore?”)
