My friend Florrie reminded me this morning that summer will be over all too soon (oouuff!)
It got me thinking: how do we know if we’re getting sufficiently relaxed, re-charged, and renewed?
If you’re anything like me, you’re not getting enough vacation time, and you may be worried that summer will end before you’ve gotten fully re-energized.
While I can’t give you more vacation time, I do have a tool for bringing the summer-time sense of ease into your regular work week—in increments.
Let’s build in more pockets of joy, wonder, silliness, and delight.
But to do this, you need to be present and participating. If you spend all your free time on FB or binge watching your favorite show, this won’t work. You have to be tuned in and fully engaged.
Want more extra-curricular summer?
Give this a whirl: think back over the past week and answer the following questions:
What do you remember seeing last week that surprised or delighted you?
What did you read that fascinated you?
What did you listen to that inspired you?
In conversations, who got you feeling energized last week?
What experience(s) out of doors, in nature, helped you to feel more whole?
What experience(s) challenged you creatively?
What or who got you laughing hard enough to bring tears to your eyes?
When did you notice that you were completely relaxed—physically and mentally?
What experience(s) made you feel happy to be alive?
Now think how these moments happened. Consider what you did to make these experiences possible. Maybe you invited someone out for coffee. Or took the scenic route home, called a friend, went for a walk, or took an extra minute to notice the beauty around you.
If you want more of these moments, it’s up to you.
“I don’t believe people are looking for the meaning of life as much as they are looking for the experience of being alive.” ― Joseph Campbell
